Marine leeches
Hosts: vertebrates and invertebrates
Habitats: outer skin
Description: Marine leeches feed off of other animals. The get
close to the host, and attach their sucker. Most leeches feed off open wounds, but
some puncture the skin. Leeches emit an antiseptic so the host doesn’t now they
are feeding. They suck until they are full, and then
release.
Larval roundworms
Hosts: many fishes
Habitats: flesh surface of liver and intestine, and body
cavities.
Description: larval roundworms live in the ocean. The get ate by
shrimp, and infest the shrimp. Then, they move up the food chain, traveling as
infested animals get ate by others. Sometimes they get pulled out of the cycle
by humans though, and try to infest them as well. Naturally, they
eventually get to dolphins and
are put back into the sea by
excrement
Tape worm
Host: rays, sharks, bass,
tuna
Habitats: intestine, digestive
track
Description: tape worms live in the digestive track of a fish,
and eat its food before the fish can absorb the nutrients.
The tapeworm gets free food, positive effect, and the fish gets food
taken out of its mouth, negative
effect.
